Professionalism

Teachers maintain a commitment to professional ethics, communicate effectively, and take responsibility for and participate in professional growth that results in enhanced student learning.

– Virginia Department of Education

The standard of Professionalism is made up of various aspects including professional growth, mastery of the English language in oral and written formats, and participating in activities outside of the classroom such as coaching, science fairs, and other clubs and after school activities.

While there are numerous ways to exhibit the standard of Professionalism, the three most crucial are: confidentiality, building relationships with students, parents and other professionals within the workplace, and setting goals for improvement of knowledge and skills of both the teacher and the students.

Grades and student information are kept in a binder on the teacher’s desk and is kept closed when the teacher is not using the binder to ensure confidentiality within the classroom. Here you can see the binder is open in an empty classroom as I work during planning period, but when students are in the room, the binder is closed, unless I am checking homework.

Here you can see me collaborating with a student on her Supreme Court cases foldable. Collaboration with students is just as imperative as collaboration with parents, and other school staff.
