Professional Knowledge

Teachers demonstrate an understanding of the curriculum, subject content, and the
developmental needs of students by providing relevant learning experiences.

– Virginia Department of Education

Professional knowledge allows students the opportunity to learn from someone who is highly educated in the subject matter, can guide the students to a better understanding of the material, and to dig deeper for more information to make their own informed decisions. Not only should teachers be knowledgeable about the subject matter taught, but make sure it meets education expectations such as Standards of Learning incorporated by the Department of Education.

While there are innumerable methods of presenting professional knowledge to students, three stand out in particular: content knowledge and the proper skills to teach it alongside curriculum standards, teaching students the skills related to the subject matter that promote higher level thinking, and combining it with other curricular areas and current events.
